What are Same-Day Visits?

Same-day visits or same-day sick visits are emergency consultation or appointment sought from a health care provider to address acute or sudden onset of symptoms your child is experiencing from a medical condition. Some of the illnesses that may warrant same-day sick visits include:

  • High fevers
  • Allergic reaction
  • Asthma attacks
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Ear infections
  • Sore throat
  • Stomach ache
  • Pneumonia
  • Urinary infections
  • Dehydration
  • Injuries such as fractures and tears
  • Upper respiratory infections

Normally, patients schedule their visits ahead of time, so doctors are aware of their every day proceedings. However, patients may wake up feeling ill and need to visit a doctor right away. Same-day visit appointments are reserved to address such sudden cases in which your health care providers set aside certain times from their schedule throughout the day for same-day scheduling to see a patient requiring emergency consultation. With such arrangements, patients understand that they can call their health care provider if they wake up feeling ill and schedule an appointment to visit their doctor that same day instead of having to wait until an appointment is available.

When your child is unwell with sudden illnesses such as flu or sudden asthma attacks or from sports-related injuries such as cuts and sprains that necessitates immediate care, you do not have the privilege of waiting for days to schedule a visit with your pediatrician. Same-day visits make it feasible to visit your pediatrician at a short notice to provide timely care for your child as many childhood illnesses and injuries are unpredictable and occur suddenly.

Same-day visit appointments cannot be provided for every type of health issue. The visits are only meant for minor issues, yet require urgent medical needs such as high fever and are not used for long-term chronic issues or preventive services such as childhood diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and immunizations. Same-day visits are designed to render immediate care for non-life-threatening injuries and medical conditions that require prompt care.
